Beijing detention houses open to the public

Detention houses in Beijing will be open for regular public visits starting August 27, chinanews.com.cn reported Friday.

The move is to increase transparency of the management and protect detainees' rights in terms of their living environment, physical and mental safety, according to Jin Zhihai, a senior official from the Supervision and Management of Detention Houses Division of the Beijing Public Safety Bureau.

Detention houses will organize public group visits such as those from government institutions, companies and schools on set opening days.

Individual visitors will have to apply first and get permission to visit after approval from the Division, but applications for individual visits are not yet available.
