The 40-year-old singer was caught by the police bureau of Beijing's Shijingshan district on Thursday.

An unnamed police officer said the result of Han's urine test was positive, but it was not known what sort of drug he took.

Before the police's confirmation, a reporter with the Legal Evening newspaper, a popular Beijing tabloid, called Han's wife Gao Shan. The latter denied Han's detention, saying that he was sleeping.

Han Xiao started his career as a singer in 1985, and had sang for several domestic movies.

He is the second pop singer detained this year for alleged drug abuse, which raised people's concern over the private life of celebrities.

Pop singer Man Wenjun, also 40, was caught when police raided a nightclub on tip-offs this May. He tested positive for ecstasy.
