Lai Changxing, one of China's most wanted fugitives, said that the timing is still not right for him to return to China, even though his ex-wife and daughter have come back to the country, the website of China News Service (CNS) reported Tuesday.

Lai, who currently lives in Canada, told the Canada-based Global Chinese Press on Saturday that Lai’s ex-wife Zeng Mingna and his younger daughter returned to Fujian province on May 3. He said they had discussed it for a long time and consulted their lawyer before making the decision.

Lai is accused of masterminding a smuggling scheme involving US$10 billion that touched off a high-profile corruption scandal in Fujian Province in the 1990s.

The Chinese government has been seeking Lai's extradition since 1999.
