Abbot, 102, wants friend to repay 1.2-m-yuan loan

The Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court on Monday opened a public hearing on a case wherein a 102-year-old abbot has sued a friend for not repaying a 1.2-million-yuan ($175,672) loan.

Shi Benhuan, abbot from the Shenzhen Hongfa temple, said he lent the large sum of money to Xiao on three separate occasions after the latter signed three IOUs.

According to Xiao, Shi's followers forced him to sign the IOUs.

Guangzhou's Tianhe district court had last December ruled in favor of the plaintiff, saying the IOUs are valid and Xiao must repay the debt.
