According to the Fund, it has raised a total of 42 million yuan ($6.15 million) from various enterprises and will first donate five million yuan ($732,000) to children in quake-hit Sichuan province.

Kobe Bryant, the NBA superstar who helped initiate the fundation, attended the charity event.

At the event, Hu Qili, chairman of China Soong Ching-Ling Foundation (CSCLF),  presented Bryant with the Soong Ching-Ling Charity Award.

"I am very excited to help kids be better, to have a better future." Bryant said during the banquet.

The Kobe Bryant China Fund, established by the CSCLF and the Kobe Bryant Family Foundation on June 30, 2009 in Los Angeles, aims to raise money for education, sports and culture programs for children from both China and the US.

In the past several weeks, a dozen of NBA players have visited China. But few receive the same wild reception as Bryant, who is said to have the largest fan base in China, apart from national hero Yao Ming, the injured Houston Rockets center.

According to the NBA, Bryant's No 24 jersey is the best seller in China, even outnumbering that of Yao.
