Bad luck boy writes his destiny afresh - tops exam

A poverty-stricken student, whose luck never really shone, turned his fate around when he scored 650 in this year's national university entrance examination.

Zhang Gonqqiu, who hails from Anyi, Jiangxi province, now contends for a seat in the prestigious Peking University.

In 1989, Zhang's house in Wenbu village, where he lived with his parents, was reduced to ashes in a fire. A kind-hearted old man offered the family his vacant house, which was devastated in a flood in 1998.

The family made a pigsty their home, with Zhang's parents raising pigs to earn their bread.

In 2006, Zhang's father was disabled in a car accident and could no longer work at the pig farm.

Zhang realized the only way he could repay his parents for their kindness was to first enter a good university.
