Yao Ming to promote World Expo 2010

Chinese basketball megastar Yao Ming will act as a special guide to introduce the upcoming Shanghai 2010 World Expo on July 5th, the Shanghai-based Oriental Morning Post reported on Wednesday.

Yao Ming has a really busy schedule on that day-besides communicating with kids who have creative ideas about the "better city, better life" campaign and promoting environment protection among the public, the NBA player will also attend the 300-day countdown ceremony for the Expo in the evening.

Yao has invited several stars from both the entertainment industry and the sports field to participate in the ceremony, which will raise funds for children in quake-hit Sichuan province as well as low-income kids from other cities. With the help of both stars and organizers, some lucky children will get free expo tickets, according to the Shanghai World Expo Coordination Bureau.

Organizers of the Shanghai World Expo hope Yao's attendance will arouse more people's interest in the international event, which kicks off in May 2010.

As a promotion ambassador for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and also a native born in that city, Yao has vowed to help the event and has called on more people to join together to promote the Shanghai World Expo.
