Tropical storm approaches, alarm switched on

BEIJING: China Meteorological Administration, the country's meteorological authority, launched a level-III or orange emergency alarm on Saturday morning in face of tropical storm Linfa.

Linfa, the third tropical storm this year, was expected to land in the coastal areas between the eastern part of Guangdong Province and southern Fujian Province or move northward along the Taiwan Strait, from Sunday noon to night on June 21, said the administration.

The storm was located at 20.5 degrees north latitude and 117.5 degrees east longitude at 9 a.m. Saturday. The wind speed was up to 23 meters per second.

It was forecasted the Linfa would continue to move toward the north at a speed of 10 km per hour.
