State Council appoints senior officials

BEIJING - China's State Council, or Cabinet, announced Friday the appointment of two senior officials.

Zhang Zhijun was appointed vice foreign minister, and Peng Qinghua replaced Gao Siren to become the director of the Liaison Office of the Chinese central government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Zhang, born in 1953, was deputy head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, while 52-year-old Peng was deputy director of the liaison office before being promoted.

The State Council also ended Chen Weilan's term as vice president of the China National School of Administration, and Wang Fengchao's term as deputy director of central government's liaison office in the HKSAR. The statement did not say where Chen and Wang, who are both close to retirement age, will be deployed.
