A hospitalized man in Chongqing municipality died suddenly from too much excitement after he was told community leaders would pay his hospital bills.

The man surnamed Zhu, 50, suffered from hypertension, coronary heart disease and stomach bleeding. He stayed in a hospital for long-term treatment.

In November 2007, community officials went to his ward to inform him of the good news. Zhu felt so excited when he heard the news that he died 10 minutes later.

Zhu's family members brought a lawsuit against the hospital because the facility did not inform the man of his medical problems.

The court ruled the hospital must pay the family 90,000 yuan ($13,190) for Zhu's death. They said the man could have taken the right drugs or control his anxiety.
