A Chinese naval ship patrolling waters off the coast of Africa was today (Sunday April 26) escorting a stranded Philippine vessel to safety after it was released by pirates, the Ministry of National Defense said.

The Huangshan, a PLA Navy frigate, arrived to rescue the chemical tanker MT Stolt Strength off the coast at Hobyo, Somalia, at the request of the Philippine government.

The ministry said the Chinese crew restocked the ship with vital food and medical supplies.

The vessel and its crew of 23 Filipio sailors were released by pirates on April 20. They had been held captive since November last year.

The tanker had began its journey home but had ran out of fuel off Somalia's eastern cost, sparking fears it could be recaptured by pirates.
