BEIJING - Beijing's main road, the Changan Avenue, is getting a makeover ahead of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in October.

The announcement was made Friday by Chen Yong, chief of the Beijing Municipal Administration Commission, at a meeting for civil administrative work in 2009.

Chen said, workers will repair the Chang'an Avenue, a key west-east road, and replace lights, phone booths, trash cans, newspaper billboards, bus signs and benches on both sides of the road. They will also redo landscaping and whitewash exteriors of buildings along the thoroughfare.

Chen did not disclose when the work would start or how much it will cost.

Other parts of the city will also benefit from the campaign, he said.

For instance, in areas where urban districts and rural areas meet, and there is a concentration of people, more public facilities will be added. The environment will also be cleaned up.
