Plans for marriage life turns into life in prison

A would-be bridegroom got a life sentence and his sweetheart and partner in crime got 13 years for stealing 190,000 yuan ($27,774) worth of gold necklaces from a jewelry shop to pay for their wedding.

The heist was the largest of its kind ever reported in Gongzhuling, Jilin province, in some 60 years.

Xu Fengchao and Qi Mingyue, wanted to get married last year but were broke.

He wore a mask and broke into the shop in downtown Gongzhuling on Oct 5, 2008 as she kept watch outside.

After smashing the glass counter, he took away 16 necklaces and ran away. They were later caught.
