BEIJING -- China will control the number of peltry processing companies and limit peltry import this year, according to a statement released by Ministry of Commerce (MOC) on its website on Saturday.

The statement, jointly issued by MOC, Ministry of Environmental Protection and China Customs, said the country would continue to ban exports of semi-finished and finished peltry products made of imported peltry, but would allow exports of finished peltry products made of imported semi-finished products.

Meanwhile, the authorities will keep the number of peltry processing companies under 229 and has set an import quota ceiling of 660,000 tonnes for this year.

The statement said a company's import of peltry products in 2009 should not exceed that in 2005.

The statement also required local commerce administrations to report new companies engaged in peltry processing trade to MOC. It said MOC would work with the other two departments to approve import quotas for new companies.
