The notes carried the "HD90" prefix which officials say is found on many of the bad bills. Mo Qinsong, 34, a native of Guiping, the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, purchased 5,500 yuan in fake notes in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, and tried to buy a gold necklace with them in a jewelry shop in Shanghai in November. The shop assistant recognized the fake notes and alerted police. Mo tried to leave the scene before police came but was held back by security guards.
