Teen attempts suicide over pricey sports shoes

A 19-year-old man attempted to kill himself by swallowing mercury apparently after his mother refused to let him buy a pair of 1,000-yuan sports shoes.

Wang Yun (not his real name), of Chengdu, Sichuan province, graduated from high school last year and works with his father, who installs air conditioners for a living.

"I felt my life was very boring with just two things: installing air conditioners in the daytime, and playing computer games at night," Wang said, in a local hospital.

Wang's grandfather said that Wang tried to commit suicide because he was refused when he asked to buy the pricey sports shoes.
