NANNING - Five people died and 23 were injured after a farm tractor tipper plunged into a ditch on Tuesday evening in Hezhou city of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The accident occurred at about 5 p.m. when traveling from Liwu village to a nearby woodland.

Four died on site, and one died at the hospital. The tractor driver was injured and is currently under medical observation.

All 28 passengers, including one woman, came from the same village. They were heading to a woodland they had signed land use contracts with. The vehicle was destroyed.

Local traffic authorities said farm tractor tippers should not be used to carry passengers. The city government is investigating.
