Updated: 2008-12-27 09:17 BEIJING - Three earthquakes jolted China's southwestern provinces on Friday, injuring 19 people and forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands more.
An earthquake measuring 4.0 on Richter scale hit southwest China's Guizhou Province Friday night. No casualties have been reported. The earthquake occurred at about 8 p.m. in Luodian County, 166 km from Guiyang, the provincial capital, said Sha Xiangui, the county's Communist Party chief. "We have phone-called all the 26 townships and received no report of casualties or house collapses. The traffic and telecommunications are running as normal," Sha said. Residents in the county seat rushed out their homes but most had returned, he said. Officials dispatched by the provincial earthquake administration were on the way to Luodian. The county, located in southern Guizhou, is mostly populated with ethnic minorities of Buyi and Miao. In the neighboring Yunnan Province, nineteen people were injured and thousands were affected in two earthquakes measuring 4.3 and 4.9 on the Richter scale early Friday.
