Man pays 5 times car value for plate

The owner of a cheap car has sparked controversy by spending a fortune on a lucky license plate in Foshan, Guangdong province.

The QQ brand model, currently selling for no more than 40,000 yuan on the local market, bears a license plate with the number 88888.

It attracts hoards of onlookers to the red car because its businessman owner parks it in the city's Shunde district.

The license plate is estimated to be worth more than 200,000 yuan ($29,200), local residents say.
