A man in Chongqing municipality cut off one of his fingers last Saturday night in a bid to dissuade his ex-wife from gambling.

Liu Chenggang, 36, and his wife Chen Yu, 35, residents in Fengdu county of the municipality, had a son three years after they married in 1993.

Chen now plays mahjong every night to occupy herself while her husband is away driving trucks.

Having quarreled frequently over her addiction, the couple divorced earlier this year but still lived together in order to look after their 12-year-old son.

Quarreling again last week, Liu cut off the small finger on his right hand in a bid to shock her out of her obsession.

It was later sewed back on at a local hospital where Chen vowed never to play mahjong again.

The names used above are not real.
