Truck crash killer helped by victim's widow
(China Daily)
Updated: 2008-12-04 08:39 A truck driver who ran down and killed a motorbike driver received a lesser sentence after the victim's wife pleaded for mercy on his behalf. Driving his pick-up truck after drinking one night, Bao, a resident in A'ershan, the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, knocked down a drunken motorbike rider named Chang. He later died from head injuries despite emergency aid after Bao had fled the scene. After expressing his remorse to Chang's family, Bao decided to take responsibility and surrender to police before selling his house and giving all the proceeds - 65,000 yuan (9,560) - to Chang's wife. Moved by Bao's sincere repentance, Chang's wife penned a letter to the court appealing for leniency on his behalf. Bao received a three-year jail term with a suspended sentence of three years. |
