A company manager in Chongqing who tried to bribe a government official received a short jail term because of the good deeds he performed in the wake of the Wenchuan earthquake.

The manager Shen Guoqing offered a bribe worth 2.5 million yuan (US$367,000) to a government official to select his tender for a highway project in 2007.

The government official was later investigated by the prosecution department, so Shen delivered himself to police and obtained a guarantor pending trial in April this year.

After the devastating earthquake in May, Shen spared no effort to help save trapped people.

Factoring in his performance, the court sentenced him to 18 months jail suspended for two years.
