ATHENS  -- The upcoming visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao is an important milestone in bilateral relations and will surely further enhance them, Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis told Xinhua in a recent interview.

"Strengthening ties with China is a major priority of the foreign policy of my government," said Karamanlis, noting that notable progress has been made in the past four years with bilateral political dialogue being enhanced and consultation deepened at all levels.

"A great contribution to the development of our ties has been the frequent exchange of visits, at all levels, culminating in the forthcoming visit of President Hu to Greece," said Karamanlis.

He said bilateral trade flows have increased and new investments are yielding tangible results. Tourism is also on the rise, a direct air-link between Athens and Beijing has been established.

The two countries have an excellent cooperation in the shipping sector with a large portion of Chinese cargo transported by Greek ships.

"I firmly believe that China's growth is an opportunity for Greek companies, producers, exporters and investors. On areas of specific interest to Greece, I should mention our exports of olive oil and canned fruit in particular,"said the Greek prime minister.

Greece has proposed building a "Greek House" in Beijing for Greek  entrepreneurs seeking to enter the Chinese market to exhibit consumer goods and services.

Greece and China have much to offer to each other, he said, suggesting that both countries adopt necessary measures to promote bilateral trade.

"Our aim is to make Greece the prime location in our region for inward Chinese investment," he said.

"China plays an ever growing role in world economic affairs. In the current economic downturn, China's role is crucial. More than ever the world is looking to China to be a contributor to global economic growth."

He added Greece firmly supports the one-China principle.

"We share common interests and common goals and I can assure you of my personal commitment and involvement to continue working closely together in strengthening this strategic partnership," said Karamanlis.

Recalling his two visits to China in 1979 and 2006, Karamanlis said rapid development and remarkable changes have left him a deep impression. He expects to visit China again soon.

Karamanlis extended his warmest congratulations on the success of the Beijing Olympic Games. He said that "One World One Dream" fully reflects the essence and the universal value of the Olympic spirit.

"I am looking forward to a successful and productive visit of President Hu to Greece," said Karamanlis.
