A man was brought to court last week after using the former phone number of a local director to defraud money in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province.

Guo spent 70 yuan ($10) to purchase a lucky mobile phone number in June. Ending in 1,1,1,1, it was once used by the director of a government department.

When Guo answered a call, he was at first surprised to be addressed as "director Li", but then made the mistake of leading on the caller and pretending to be the official.

Guo was detained in September after using the cell phone to pressure the person who called him "director Li" to deposit 3,000 yuan into his overdrawn bank account.

By chance, the person happened to meet the real director Li later and together they sought police help.

The city's Jinshui District People's Court is yet to rule on the matter.
