An elderly villager and her two grandchildren were bitten by rats while sleeping at home in the suburbs of Liu'an, Anhui province.

It is believed the rats were seeking revenge after the woman's husband had exterminated other rats.

Chen Zhenglan woke in great pain at 2 am last Sunday and found her back and waist bleeding.

Lifting the quilt off her granddaughter, 7, and grandson, 5, who were sleeping on the same bed, she was astonished to find their fingers were bleeding.

Yan Baoyi, Chen's husband, said that he and his granddaughter were bitten several times last summer after he poisoned two big rats to death and trampled several smaller ones.

In late October, he said he had killed a big rat.

A college professor in Anhui has advised the family to raise a cat to keep the house safe.
