Wild elephants have destroyed 1.3 million yuan ($198,800) worth of banana trees in Yunnan province.

From late last month, 17 wild elephants destroyed about 30,000 banana trees while rampaging through farmland in Tianfang village in Mengla county, Yunnan province.

According to Deng Yuankuan, a local farmer whose 1.3 hectares of banana trees were also trampled, the rogue elephants have wreaked havoc five times in the past month and destroyed more than 90 percent of banana trees in his village.

"The price of bananas has gone up more than 2 yuan per kg in the market and I planned to make more income this year, but now my dream is broken," Deng said.
