Soldier cares for parents of brother in arms
(China Daily)
Updated: 2008-11-10 08:44 A retired soldier has been looking after the parents of his comrade-in-arms for more than 28 years in Zigui, Hubei province. Li Yuancheng, 54, now head of a power supply bureau in his county, says he has neither complaints nor regrets about looking after the elderly couple who have no other children or siblings. Li and his fellow villager Fu Xiangen joined the army in the 1970s and became very close friends. They promised to look after each other's parents if one of them died as they were deployed during the border war between China and Vietnam in January, 1979. After Fu's death in battle, Li has kept his promise. When Li retired in 1980, he took in Fu's parents and has treated them even better than his own on occasions. Li said he would always honor his commitment. (Changjiang Commercial News) |
