SAINT-MALO - France's Minister of State for European Affairs Jean-Pierre Jouyet on Wednesday praised China's efforts in tackling global climate change.

Speaking at a press conference during the World Summit of Regions on Climate Change here, Jouyet said he has noticed the efforts of some emerging economies such as China in coping with world climate change.

China has been paying increasing attention to sustainable development and has taken measures to adjust its mode of economic growth to meet the needs of environmental protection, Jouyet said.

That shows China is moving in the right direction and the Chinese government is acting responsibly on the issue, he said.

The French minister said his country is pushing for the European Union (EU)'s approval of a package of measures on energy and climate and called for continued efforts in addressing climate change amid the global financial crisis.

The EU should take the lead in delivering on its pledges on climate change, otherwise it will not be in a position to urge other countries to do likewise, he added.
