Elephants return home 3 years after drug abuse

An elephant returned home to Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province, after taking three years to recover from drug abuse inflicted on it by a gang of smugglers.

Five elephants were found by forest police in Dehong prefecture, Yunnan province, while being used to smuggle drugs in 2005.

One of the elephants, named Xiguang, was administered heroin by the criminals to make it more docile.

After they were saved from the gang, the five animals were sent to Hainan province where they took a long time to bounce back to health.

Last Sunday, Xiguang and four friends were all sent back to their home valley in Yunnan.
