Three other Chinese women were injured, the Chinese embassy said. One of the dead has been identified as Piao Zheng-shu, 52, from Shenyang of Northeast China's Liaoning province, according to embassy consul Song Yu-ming.

The Chinese website of South Korea's Chosun Ilbo named the other two dead Chinese as Li Yue-zi, who went to South Korea last year from Northeast China's Heilongjiang province and worked at a restaurant near the lodging house, and Min Tai-zi, who died from jumping from the third floor after been stabbed.

Police said the South Korean man suspected in the killing was motivated by a combination of psychological distress, financial troubles and a gangster movie.

The 31-year-old suspect is accused of setting fire to his room in a low-cost lodging house in southern Seoul on Monday and then stabbing other residents of the building with a sashimi knife while fleeing the blaze. Seven people were also wounded in the attack.

Kim Kap-shik, chief detective at Seoul's Gangnam Police Station, told reporters that the man - identified so far only by his surname Jeong - said he had been persecuted since childhood and was looked down on by those around him.

The suspect "suffered from a lot of psychological pain," Kim said.

Jeong used to work part-time at restaurants and parking lots, but has been out of a job since April, police said.
