BEIJING -- China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) on Monday announced 36 Beijing-based university students had been accepted for a one-year internship with the State Council, the country's Cabinet.

In total, 66 students nationwide received the Development Research Scholarship for 2008-2009. The scholarship was granted by the CDRF and sponsor General Motors-China Corp.

Among the students, 36 Beijing-based recipients were working in a Development Research Center of the State Council (DRCSC) internship for one year. They also each received a prize of 10,000 yuan (about 1,463 US dollars). Another 30 students went to the Development Research Centers in their respective provinces and municipalities.

Zong Fangyu, a Guanghua School of Management of Peking University postgraduate, was one of the 36 students. She serves in the DRCSC business department.

"In contrast to my previous impression, the atmosphere here is not tense at all. The seniors (officials) are very easy going, although it is in the State Council."

In her duties, Zong will participate in some research projects and assist policy-researchers by doing some research in her spare time.

Another intern, Peng Chao, a Ph.D candidate from Renmin University, said, "I'm looking forward to working in the State Council. I can talk with those big names showing up in books and TV screens, which will help me a lot."

The Development Research Scholarship was established in 1999, aimed at exploring a new system of cultivating policy-research personnel.

Gu Mingming, a CDRF official, said "There were a mere five interns at the very beginning. Today, after 10 years growth, 66 students from over 30 universities are working with the Development Research Centers of state council and provinces and municipalities."
