A man in his late 60s encountered a 2-m black bear one afternoon last month while digging for radishes on a vegetable plot near his home in the town of Jiaohe, a city of Jilin province.

"After picking up a large radish, I saw a figure nearby and thought that it must have been a thief," Li said.

"As I went to see, I was caught by the bear who held me and bit me on the head and the shoulder."

Li cleverly distracted the intruder by tossing the radish and making a quick getaway.

He was rushed to a hospital where he was in a stable condition.

Authorities said the man would be compensated for the incident.
