Young lovers saved from rising river waters

Local police and firefighters in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, saved two sweethearts who were trapped on a small island in the middle of a flooding river.

Duan, a local, rode a motorcycle with his girlfriend to the Jinma River outside the city on Sept 21 afternoon and crossed a then dry riverbed to the island.

But the river suddenly flooded and the two youngsters were trapped by rising waters.

Police and firefighters soon arrived and tried to rescue the youngsters with a boat.

But the current was too strong and they failed several times.

After more than an hour, the rescuers finally saved them.
