(China Daily)
Updated: 2008-10-01 10:02 NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon congratulated the People's Republic of China on its 59th anniversary at a reception held by the Chinese envoy to the UN on Monday. He said China has been playing an important role in international affairs and the successful hosting of the Olympics and the launch of the Shenzhou VII spacecraft are just some major achievements of the country. "I wish China and the Chinese people continue to achieve the same successes in all areas," he said at the reception hosted by Zhang Yesui, the new Chinese ambassador to the UN.
Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger also congratulated China on the launch of Shenzhou VII and believed it was a new contribution to international space research. US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte on Monday spoke highly of the country's achievements. "China is a magnificent country with many achievements," he said at a reception at the new chancery of the Chinese Embassy in Washington DC. Negroponte said he was impressed by China's recent accomplishments, including the hosting of the Beijing Olympics and the Shenzhou VII manned space mission, and he expects China to continuously achieve more successes. He said the US-China relationship had "come a long way" during the past three decades and two nations had broadened and deepened relations at all levels. "Now the two countries not only talk about major international issues, but also jointly solve many problems," Negroponte said. The US government is looking forward to more cooperation with China, he said. China's Ambassador to the United States Zhou Wenzhong said he is looking forward to the upcoming 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States. He told US guests that as long as both sides always bear in mind their strategic and long-term interests, abide by the three joint communiques, respect each other's central interests, increase exchanges, dialogue and cooperation, handle differences appropriately, "we have every reason to expect an even better China-US relationship in the future". About 500 representatives from the US government, Congress, international organizations and foreign diplomatic missions attend the reception. Xinhua |
