Pacts signed with 3 nations

Updated: 2008-09-17 08:00 China signed agreements on economic and technological cooperation with three countries on Tuesday, as the final diplomatic gathering of the summer coincided with the end of the Beijing Paralympics. President Hu Jintao met with the president of Guinea-Bissau Tuesday afternoon, while Premier Wen Jiabao held separate talks with his counterparts from Niger and Bangladesh in the morning. Each meeting was followed by a signing ceremony.
"Through years of mutual support and sympathy, the friendship between China and Guinea-Bissau has developed into brotherhood," Hu told Guinea-Bissau's President Joao Bernardo Vieira. China forged its friendship with Guinea-Bissau during the African country's struggle for independence, Vieira said. He thanked Hu for China's long-term assistance to his country. Vieira's visit came just days after the construction of the Guinea-Bissau's government office building sponsored by China began in its capital Bissau. The $22 million project will house all of the government's ministries when completed in 2010. Vieira co-chaired the foundation stone laying ceremony with China's ambassador to the country. Friendly and cooperative ties between the two countries are very solid and have yielded fruitful results, Vieira said that day, adding the Guinea-Bissau government was grateful for China's generous help. Before setting out for Beijing, Vieira said he believed the closing ceremony of the Beijing Paralympics would just be as good as the one for the Olympics. This trip will make up for he and his family missing the splendid opening ceremony for the Olympics, he said. Vieira and other foreign state leaders and government officials will also have a luncheon with President Hu and his wife Liu Yongqing tomorrow at the Diaoyutai State Guest House. The King of Jordan, prime minister of Samoa and vice-premiers of Tonga and Turkmanistan are also scheduled to arrive tomorrow. |
