Chinese shares end week higher

Updated: 2008-08-29 21:00 Shares of oil companies and airlines gained in response to lower world crude prices, which dropped US$2.56 to US$115.59 overnight on New York Mercantile Exchange. PetroChina, the country's largest oil company, rose 1.08 percent to 13.11 yuan, while Sinopec, Asia's top oil refiner, was up 1.09 percent to 10.22 yuan. All airline companies took off. China Southern gained 4.3 percent to 3.64 yuan and Air China rose 2.7 percent to 5.7 yuan. Bank of China (BOC) posted a profit after tax of 42.18 billion yuan in its first half report on Thursday, up 42.78 percent from the same period last year. Its shares rose 1.37 percent to 3.7 yuan. BOC is the last of 14 listed banks on the two bourses that have reported a favorable interim performance. All bank shares rose, with Shanghai Pudong Development Bank up 3.05 percent to 21.97 yuan and China Construction Bank rising 2.05 percent to 5.48 yuan. |
