The bolt from the blue was too sudden to bear for Liu's parents who travelled toBeijing as quickly as they could from their home in Inner Mongolia. Tears swelled in the eyes of the prominent young dancer.

An official statement from Olympic Ceremony Operation Centre spoke highly of Liu's performance and expressed extreme sorrow for the "irretrievable sacrifices" she made for the Olympic Games.

Zhang Jigang, deputy director of the opening ceremony, visited and thanked Liu in tears, assuring her that she would "remain in the cast list of opening ceremony as the sole dancer forSilk Road”.

Liu showed tremendous courage and optimism after the accident. To give the reporter a better photo, she neatened her hair and leant slightly forward in the bed, both hands waving vicotory figures in the air.

"As a dancer, I fell for the sake of the Olympics. There is no regret. My life would resume with beauty in another form ", she said with a big smile on her pale face.
