Rescuers find bodies of 9 miners trapped in gas blast

ZHENGZHOU  -- Rescuers in central China's Henan Province have found the bodies of all the remaining nine trapped miners in the August 1 colliery gas blast, raising the total death toll from the incident to 23.

The blast at 1 a.m. on August 1 in the No. 4 mine owned by Pingyu Coal and Power in Liangbei Town, Henan Province, killed 14 miners and trapped 11.

Two miners were rescued at 6:40 a.m. the next day.

Rescuers found two bodies on August 5 in the tunnel, five on Saturday night and two on Sunday night, according to the Xuchang city government.

The cause of the accident was still being investigated.
