Major hospitals in Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, have been swamped with requests for births by Caesarean section on Aug 8, opening day of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The desire for "Olympics" babies has prompted an alarming number of bookings for Caesarean deliveries, some as much as three months in advance.

The many women using their connections to pull strings in this connection are a cause of great concern to local gynecologists, who are doing their best to dampen this obstetrical aspect of Olympics fever. They warn that birth by Caesarean section carries far greater risks than by natural labor, particularly to women who have not reached their full term of pregnancy.
