Gao Zhongsheng, 45, of Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, has been blind since a detonator exploded in his face when he was eight years old.

Gao enjoys sewing, but has never liked having to ask others to thread the needle. In an effort to be more independent, he decided to teach himself to do this with his tongue. After years of practice, he has now mastered this skill, and the cotton bags he makes are as good as any sewn by people with sight.
