TAIYUAN -- Authorities in Shanxi Province confirmed 11 people had been buried in debris after a landslide early on Friday in a mountainous area in the distant suburbs of Taiyuan, the provincial capital.

The landslide at Sigou Village in Majiazhuang Township, Loufan County, buried some residences, they said. No other details are available yet.

The publicity department with the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China said several officials, including vice governors Shen Lianbin and Zhang Jianmin, had rushed to the scene.

Loufan is a two-and-a-half hour bus ride from downtown Taiyuan.
