China Daily launched on Friday a photo album, "Reporting from Epicenter" featuring 311 news photos taken by Chinese journalists during the May 12 earthquake.

"This photo album is to commemorate and pay condolences to those who lost their lives, and to salute those who dedicated themselves to combating this natural disaster," said Zhu Ling, the editor-in-chief of China Daily at the launching ceremony.

The pictures, capturing the most disastrous and heartbreaking moments in the earthquake, give people an up-close look at the tragedy.

Representatives from more than 50 foreign embassies and international organizations in Beijing attended Friday’s event.

China Daily also presented copies of the photo album to officials from the countries that sent medical rescue teams to the quake-hit region.

Impressed by the picture depicting Premier Wen Jiabao embracing two girls, Mario Alzugaray, from the Cuban Embassy, said that the moment is very touching and China has shown her strength in the disaster.

"China has gone through a very difficult moment and it is important to recall all the efforts," he said.

Estonian Ambassador Andres Unga said the pictures are a great reminder of the disaster and give people who were not present in the devastated areas a detailed look of the tragedy.

"It shows the magnitude of the disaster once again. And thanks to the heroic reporters, we actually know the scale of the tragedy and where the assistance was needed the most," said Unga.

Nicholas Snyder, assistant spokesperson of the United States Embassy, said it is the first time he saw a photography exhibition about the May 12 earthquake.

"I was touched and shocked by some of the pictures and we'd like to contact those reporters if possible to know more about their experience," he said.
