Man detained after stabbing police in Shanghai

SHANGHAI -- A man was detained at the scene after he assaulted nine police officers and one security guard at a police branch in the Zhabei district of Shanghai on Tuesday morning.

Five police officers reportedly died of their injuries.

A source from the Municipal Public Security Department told Xinhua that a man brandishing a knife stormed into the facility at about 9 a.m.

A witness surnamed Yi said some of the officers had chest injuries, while others had blood-stained faces. All the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

The man, who came from outside Shanghai, was quickly taken into custody at the scene by other police.

There is no further information about the identity of the assailant or why he attacked the officers.
