A 65-year-old man plunged three nails into his face because the toothache he suffered was finally too painful to bear.

Surnamed Zhang, a resident of Penglai, Shandong province, had refused to see dentists because of the high medical costs. He would self-medicate when his teeth gave him trouble.

About 10 days ago, he was hit by a massive toothache and resorted to using the nails. But the crazed move only caused his face to swell and he was unable to open his mouth to eat.

Only after his wife sent him to hospital were the 3 nails removed.
