The city of Nanjing on Saturday opened a 300-m sidewalk especially for dogs through the joint efforts of the neighborhood committee, the kennel association and relevant social organizations.

The sidewalk runs parallel to one for pedestrians. "We only had this particular area as others had been rejected by residents," Chang Qing, director of the Jiqing Community Association, said.

The sidewalk is open 24 hours, and dog owners have the obligation to see that it remains clean.

"We are looking to set up more such sidewalks in other districts of the city," Chu Yaohui, deputy director of the kennel association, said.
