A fearful 56-year-old farmer from a village nearing Handan, Hebei province, has been sleeping in the open for four years with his watchdogs following the theft of one of his mules.

Wang Wentang's mule was stolen from his courtyard while he was sleeping inside his house four years ago.

Since then he has slept outside every night in the courtyard, even on the coldest winter nights. He hasn't lost a mule since.
