"This kind clothing represents China's tradition well since it originated in
the Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago. The costume went out of fashion gradually
at the end of Ming Dynasty in 17th century," explained one organizer of this
event surnamed Chang.
Graduates dressing like students from the Han Dynasty thanked their teachers
in a traditional way for giving them a good education. Female students nodded
and bent their knees slightly and linked their fingers resting on their right
hip. The young men clasped their hands together and raised them above their
heads and bowed deeply three times.
"By taking photos in Han costumes we can have unforgettable memories and
these clothes also represent our traditional culture," said one graduates
wearing the outfit.
Guo Huihua, a teacher participating in the ceremony said, "Han clothing is one part of our national civilization. We
want to show our respect in this way. We completely
support our students."

More than 20 web portals once made a joint proposal in early April. It
proposed the Han costume should be chosen as the Chinese ceremonial dress in the
upcoming Beijing Olympics.
But lots of netizens were opposed to the idea. "This kind of activity is
meaningless and superficial. It can't enhance our traditional culture at all,"
wrote one netizen.
Sun Jiazheng, the Minister of Culture also questioned whether the costume of
Han could represent the whole country.
Meanwhile, the young graduates want to make a statement through their
clothing. "We did this just to remind our people of our tradition and culture.
We can't leave all our civilization behind as China is a country with long
history and splendid culture," said Chang, the organizer of this event.
