A policeman from southeastern China's Fujian province, Huang Xiaofang, has made it through all the elimination rounds to win himself a ticket to duel with martial arts masters from across the world at the Beijing International Wulin Competition. The Fujian-based Strait News reported, as the only Chinese policeman taking part in the competition, Huang Xiaofang has signed a "life-and-death contract" with the sponsors of the game, agreeing the sponsors take no responsibility if he is accidentally beaten to death at the event. Now 26 years old, Huang Xiaofang began learning martial arts at a very early age. He graduated from the Wushu Department of Jimei Physical Education College. After years of tough training, he became master of the Wuzu Fist from Southern Shaolin Temple. In addition, he also knows how to box and various types of Chinese martial arts. He said the goal of his trip to Beijing is to seize first place in the competition, adding he will not disgrace the reputation stretching back hundreds of years of Shaolin kungfu. Huang Xiaofang was the winner of the National Police Wushu Competition in 2005. He said two advantages have made him quite confident he will win the title. The first is that he has studied all sorts of kungfu, both from China and foreign countries; in addition, his 4-year college education made him witty and psychologically stronger. The second reason is his work has made him more courageous and perseverant through fighting crime. But, he admits, the competition doesn't divide players into different levels; therefore, his height and weight compared to other contestants may make him inferior. The schedule for the competition has already been set. If everything goes smoothly, Huang Xiaofang will compete in 6 rounds. Among his first two rivals, one is Shi Haifeng, a Chinese competitor from the Special Forces, and the other is Chen Zhasheng, a physical training college student. Friends of Huang Xiaofang said he has arrested over 100 suspects over his 3-year career, and that security in the area where he works has been greatly improved. They are confident that Huang Xiaofang will beat all the other players and take first place. The competition forbids contestants from wearing boxing gloves, helmets, or other protective gear. Competitors can voluntarily sign the "life-and-death contract." From next Tuesday, China Central Television will broadcast the competition
live for 5 weeks.
