An octogenarian woman in Lianjiang County, Fujian Province, is praised as a "living Buddha" by local residents because she still lives a thrifty life after donating more than 3 million yuan ($387,000) to charity.

The woman, surnamed Liu, doesn't have to worry about finances as her children, who all live abroad, regularly send her money. Because she was always too poor to go to school, Liu decided to spend all her savings to help poor students get education.

About 1,000 students in the province who had to stop studying because of poverty have returned to schools thanks to Liu's generosity. In contrast, she spends less than 10 yuan ($1.28) a day, one of her neighbors revealed.
