Hong Kong most popular for mainland tourists

Hong Kong became the most popular tourism destination for domestic Chinese visitors last year, the Ministry of Public Security reported today.

Mainland citizens made 34.52 million overseas trips last year, growing 11.27 percent from a year earlier. Hong Kong attracted more tourists than other destinations, followed by Macau, Japan, Thailand, Korea, Russia, the United States, Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia.

Foreigners made 22.21 million visits to the mainland last year, more than a half of whom traveled to sightsee, rising 9.65 percent from a year earlier. More tourists came from Korea than other countries, including Japan, Russia, the US, Malaysia and Singapore.

Transport operators provided about 21 million services, including 367,900 flights, 56,500 trains and 503,600 ships between the mainland and overseas areas last year, up 4.72 percent from a year earlier.
